Soliloquy for Tenor Trombone and Piano

ABOUT THE COMPOSITION

Soliloquy was inspired by the composer’s participation at the Argentinian festival Trombonanza in August 2017. The composer discovered a unique spirit of familial music making. Many participants studied, taught, and were trained classically, but in the evenings, after the formal events of the day had ended, players would bring out their instruments at local restaurants and continue to make music late into the evening, this time in mostly jazz and Latin styles, purely for the joy of doing so. The atmosphere was Bohemian in nature and something special to behold. Wanting to hold onto this unique feeling and thank the community of players for their contributions, Soliloquy was birthed. It is a musing or retrospective of the composer’s experiences during this time.

Soliloquy was premiered on February 23, 2018 by Professor Tony Baker at the University of North Texas.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Michael Schneider is a performing pianist, active collaborator, educating artist, and composer. He was raised in the West Texas town of San Angelo and had the opportunity to learn many instruments in his youth (piano, violin, oboe, saxophone, double bass, and marimba) in addition to conducting and composing. Michael Schneider holds piano performance degrees from the University of North Texas, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the University of Texas at Austin. He has performed as a soloist and collaborator throughout North America and also abroad in Europe, Russia, and South America.
