Gottschalk: His Life and Works

This multimedia-enabled concert tells the story of America’s first great virtuoso – Louis Moreau Gottschalk, who lived during the time of the Civil War. Audiences love to learn about the history weaved throughout captivating performances of some of his most brilliant works.

Born and reared in New Orleans, Gottschalk travelled to Europe and gained fame as a contemporary of Liszt, Schumann, and Chopin, with the latter pronouncing that Gottschalk would become the “king of pianists”. Upon returning home with his newfound fame, Gottschalk quickly became an advocate for the North during the Civil War and brought music to cities all over the US, including hundreds of frontier mining towns and along the battlefront – performing for many who never would have heard music like this otherwise.
